My journey began in Coín, a thriving market town nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Mijas.

A short drive from Coín, in the village of Monda, I visited the wonderful Bodega Remsamen vineyard.
Founded by Dutch couple René and Marjolijn, the winery tells the inspiring story of leaving behind busy corporate careers to create a successful vineyard in rural Spain.
Their guided tours and wine tastings offer fascinating insight into local wine production and provide one of the most authentic experiences you'll find in Andalucía.
For travellers looking to escape the crowds and experience a different side of southern Spain, it's a wonderful addition to any itinerary.
Mijas Pueblo: One of Andalucía's Most Beautiful White Villages
Perched high above the coastline, Mijas Pueblo is everything you'd imagine a traditional Andalusian village to be.
Whitewashed houses, colourful flower-filled balconies, cobbled streets and breathtaking viewpoints create postcard-perfect scenery at every turn.
Best Things to Do in Mijas Pueblo
One of the highlights is the Paseo de la Muralla, where panoramic views stretch across the Costa del Sol and out to the Mediterranean Sea.
While many visitors arrive on day trips, staying overnight reveals a quieter, more peaceful side of Mijas.

Granada: A City That Captivates
Granada effortlessly blends history, culture and incredible food.
Begin by wandering through the Alcaicería, once the city's Moorish silk market, before heading to Andalucía's most famous attraction—the magnificent Alhambra.

The Alhambra is one of Europe's greatest architectural masterpieces.

An ingenious Moorish water system still feeds the fountains from the Río Darro centuries later.
Top Tip: Book Alhambra Tickets Early
Tickets regularly sell out months in advance. Although a small number may be released each day, availability is never guaranteed, so booking well ahead is highly recommended.
Where I Stayed in Granada
I stayed at Suites Campo del Príncipe in Granada's historic Realejo district, which proved an excellent base for exploring the city on foot. Located on the lively Campo del Príncipe square, it offered easy access to Granada's tapas bars, historic streets and major attractions, while the Alhambra was just a short taxi or bus ride away.
For those seeking a more luxurious stay, Granada is home to some truly exceptional hotels. The Parador de Granada, located within the Alhambra grounds, offers a unique opportunity to stay inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the iconic Hotel Alhambra Palace combines historic Moorish-inspired architecture with spectacular views across the city. One of my favourite meals was at Taberna La Ninfa on Campo del Príncipe, where fresh seafood, delicious pizza and excellent local wine rounded off a perfect Andalusian evening under the stars.
The Arabian Qurter - Albacin
Authentic Flamenco in Granada's Albaicín
No visit to Granada would be complete without experiencing authentic flamenco.
I spent an unforgettable evening at El Tabanco in the Albaicín district, where the intimate venue, passionate performers and traditional atmosphere created one of the highlights of my trip. This very small venue is as far away from a tourist show as you can get, make sure to get there early and secure a seat.
The emotional, authentic performance perfectly captured the soul of Andalucía.
The Heart of Granada's Moorish Food Scene: The Albaicín
The best place to experience Granada's Moorish restaurant scene is the Albaicín, the city's historic Arab quarter overlooking the Alhambra.
Wandering through its narrow streets often feels more like being in Marrakech than Spain. Around Calderería Nueva and Calderería Vieja—sometimes known as the "Street of the Teahouses"—you'll find a concentration of Moroccan restaurants, traditional teterías (tea houses), sweet shops and North African cafés.
The atmosphere is part of the experience:
- Ornate lanterns
- Mosaic tiles
- Carved woodwork
- Low seating and cushions
- Mint tea served in decorative metal teapots
- The aroma of spices drifting through the streets
Many visitors are surprised by just how authentic the area feels.
What to Eat
Typical Moorish and North African dishes include:
- Lamb or chicken tagine
- Couscous with vegetables

- Grilled kebabs

These tea houses blend Moorish décor with a relaxed atmosphere, making them ideal for escaping the afternoon heat after visiting the Alhambra. Many serve:

Ronda: A Spectacular Finale
My final stop was the dramatic hilltop town of Ronda.
Perched high above El Tajo Gorge, the famous Puente Nuevo bridge is every bit as spectacular as the photographs suggest.
A Hidden Gem in Ronda: Casa Don Bosco
One of my favourite discoveries was Casa Don Bosco.
Its peaceful gardens and terrace provide one of the finest views of the bridge away from the crowds and offer the perfect place to pause and appreciate Ronda's breathtaking setting.
As with Mijas, staying overnight allows you to experience the town once the day-trippers have left, revealing a far more relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
